FAUSTINA SENIOR, wife of Antoninus Pius, (died A.D.141), AE sestertius, (26.66 grams), issued 147, Rome mint, obv. draped bust to right of Faustina, around DIVA FAV STINA, rev. Aeternitas draped seated to left holding phoenix on globe and sceptre, around [AETE]R NITAS, S C in exergue, (S.4606, BMC 1484, RIC 1103, C.15). Dark brown patina, very fine.

Ex Manfred Wilschke January 2001. The phoenix signifies not only eternity, but also the hope of better times, because this bird was formerely believed to rise again into existence from its ashes.
