SYRIA, Kingdom of, Seleucus I, (312-280 B.C.), silver drachm, (3.860 grams), Susa mint [Kritt], Persepolis - Istakhr mint [Newell], Newell Group A, c.300 B.C. or later, obv. head of Alexander to right wearing panther skin over helmet and adorned with the ear and horns of a bull, dotted border, rev. Winged Victory standing to right, placing a wreath on a trophy, monogram to left and to right **DI*, to left **SELEUKOU*, traces of **BASILEWS* to right, (cf.S.6837, Newell ESM 414 [p.154, pl.XXXII, 2], Kritt p.31, cf.ACNAC Houghton 1024). Minor surface porosity, otherwise nearly very fine and very rare.
Newell knew of one example of this coin type and that was the example in the Naville X sale (lot 798). Kritt in his evaluation of this coin type reatributed the issue to Susa and not to Persepolis for which Newell attributed it. That coin is similar in condition to this coin.
