JAHANGIR, (A.H. 1014-1037, A.D.1605-1628), round Gold mohur, (10.806 grams), struck in Ajmer mint, issued A.H. 1023 (A.D. 1614), Regnal Year 9, obv. emperor seated on throne to left, Jahangir legend around, 'Fate pictured on coin of gold the likeness of His Majesty, Shah Jahangir', within dotted circle, rev. sun with rays, hijri year 1023, Struck at Ajmer, year 9, legend 'The letters of Jahangir and Allahu Akbar, from the first to last day are always equivalent (in value)', all within dotted circles, (BMC 319 [same dies], Num. Chron. 1929 p.24-5 [Pl.1, 6], Lahore 889, KM.179.6). Has been mounted, otherwise good fine and very rare.
Ex. SBV, Basel, with ticket and Seaby Coin and Medal Bulletin, April 1971, (G696 illustrated, Å“165) This type with its distinctive portrait of the seated Jahangir appears to come from only one set of dies. It is a representative example from the pinacle numismatic art in Mogul coinage.
