EDWARD THE CONFESSOR, (1042-1066), penny, pointed helmet type, issued 1053-1056, obv. traces of legend, pointed helmet bust with sceptre to right, rev. PIDIA ON PINCEST (Widia of Winchester) with short cross voided with termination in three crescents, (S.1179, N.825, Br.6, BMC vii). Toned, weak on legends, otherwise nearly extremely fine.
Ex Chancton, Sussex find of 21 December 1866 (deposited in 1066), and Sir John Evans Collection (d.1908), and from B.A. Seaby Ltd with ticket by Frank Purvey (Å“90), purchased in 1975.
