LONDON, T.Rouse, Eagle Tavern City Road, Refreshment ticket for sixpence in lead (35mm) (D&W 68/175) undated but circa 1830. Pierced for suspension, nearly very fine and very rare.
Purchased from Schwer in 1984. 'Up and down the City Road, In and Out of the Eagle That's the way the money goes Pop! goes the weasel' The `weasel' was an implement used in weaving. The song refers to the Weavers `popping' (London expression for pawning this implement with the pawnbroker to raise money). This tavern was erected in 1827 on the site of the Shepherd and Shepherdess. In 1882 General Booth purchased it for his Salvation Army Barracks.
