AELIUS, (Caesar A.D. 136-138), AE as, Rome mint, issued A.D. 137, (13.13 grams), obv. bare head of Aelius to right, L AELIVS CAESAR around, rev. TR POT COS II around, S C across field, Spes advancing to left, holding flower and skirt, (cf.S.1215, RIC 1067, C.57). Even dark brown patina, very fine and rare in this condition.

Aelius was adopted by Hadrian as his heir in A.D. 136, and appointed governor of Pannonia. He however predeceased the emperor by dying of tuberculosis in A.D. 138. The Spes type alludes to hope of Rome and the future of Aelius.
