SOLD $3,100
T.KNIGHT counterstamp, on Peru, Charles III two reales, 1774, Lima mint, counter stamp on obverse. Coin very good, counterstamp very fine and extremely rare.
T.Knight counterstamp appears on several N.S.W. holey dollars and dumps. The countermark appearing on the above two reales coin (a proclamation type coin) points to the counter marking being made early in the 19th century and probably up to 1850 by a local individual who placed his name on coins readily accessible to him at that time. Holey dollars ceased to circulate in 1829 and proclamation coins of the Spanish dollar type probably ceased to circulate also at the same time. In the 1828 census of the colony only two males of the name Knight are listed both of the labouring class one coming as a free man the other as a convict (information supplied by Dr.W.J.D. Mira).
