GROUP OF NINE: Naval General Service Medal (GVR) - one bar - Persian Gulf 1909-1914; 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Pacific Star; British War Medal 1939-45 with M.I.D.; France Croix de Guerre 1914-17. Lieut J.S.Hoffman R.N. H.M.S. Fox on first medal, Lieut J.S.Hoffman R.N. on W.W.I trio. First medal engraved, W.W.I medals impressed, remaining medals unnamed. Mounted for display. Extremely fine.
Commander Jack Sanler Hoffman was on board the destroyer Stronghold which took part in the disastrous battle of the Java Sea, February - March 1st 1942. She escaped destruction on that occasion, but next day she was sunk by a superior Japanese force when making for Australia. Nine officers and sixty one ratings were killed in the action. With paperwork.
