MM: 'When the enemy launched a strong counter attack against 'B' Company, Sergeant Mansfield's Platoon Commander was rendered unfit for further action. Sergeant Mansfield immediately took command of his platoon, and moving between sections under enemy fire, so directed and controlled the fire of his platoon that repeated enemy counter attacks were repulsed. When communications with his Company Headquarters became disrupted, Sergeant Mansfield moved out three times under heavy enemy mortar to re-establish communication. Again when a strong enemy attack was launched against 'B' Company at Mabelebu, Sergeant Mansfield continually moved about under fire assisting his platoon command in the control and direction of the fire against the enemy. During both operations Sergeant Mansfield displayed outstanding leadership, devotion to duty and high personal courage.'
