Lot 4682

Estimate $100
Bid at live.noble.com.au

BRITISH HONDURAS, copy as a variant of countermarked dollar with crown over block GR on eight reales, 1812, Mexico City mint, (cf.P.3). Countermark very fine, host coin good fine.

A similar example was described and illustrated in Noble Numismatics Sale 59 (lot 2546) with the following comments. The countermark is spurious and probably made in the early 20th century, and the attribution to British Honduras for similar types is uncertain. Pridmore notes that the type without frame and GR in cursive script is genuine and was issued on dollars up to 1818. Issues on coins struck after this date must be modern copies. The use of a different block GR further emphasises the status as a modern concoction. A similar example was in the Ray Byrne sale (Jess Peters No.78, held on June 13-5, 1975, lot 1379 and realised $65) on a 1816 Mexico City eight reales.

Estimate / sale price does not include buyer's premium (currently 22% including GST) which is added to hammer price.
