ROYAL AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA, a group of prize medals in silver and bronze (70mm) by J.S.& A.B.Wyon, awarded to Horwood & Co (Adelaide), dating between 1886 and 1892, together with Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition, 1887, in bronze (76mm) by E.A.Altmann. Medals are inscribed on edges as follows:- 1. Bronze medal - 'Windmill in Action Adelaide March 1886' 2. Bronze medal - 'Noiseless Selfacting Tank Valve March 1886' 3. Bronze medal - 'Windmill in Action Autumn Show 1887' 4. Bronze medal - First Order of Merit - medal uninscribed but case is embossed on inside lid 'J.H.Horwood & Co' 5. Silver medal - 'For Windmill 1889' 6. Silver medal - 'Well Boring Machinery Sept Show 1890' 7. Silver medal - 'Windmill March 1890' 8. Bronze medal - 'Windmill in Action Autumn Show 1890' 9. Silver medal - 'For Windmill Sept 1891' 10.Bronze medal - 'For windmill March 1891' 11.Silver medal - 'For Windmill March 1892' All medals cased. Cut on edge and on obverse of medal No.1, edge bruises and some spotting on medal No.6, otherwise nearly FDC-FDC.(11)

J.H.Horwood & Co., founded by Joseph Henry Horwood in the 1880's, at premises in Currie Street, Adelaide. The company manufactured agricultural machinery including hydraulic hoists, wool scouring machines, well boring tools, windmills and pumps, their speciality being the 'Vaneless Adelaide' windmill. Exhibiting at major agricultural shows in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales the company won many awards over the years. The company become Horwood Bagshaw Ltd in 1924 and are still operating today in Mannum, South Australia. Reference:'Horwood Bagshaw - 125 years Progress'.
