Welcome to auction Sale 141 which coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the company which commenced business in April 1976. Looking at the contents of the sale on the Order of Sale pages you will see this is a well-rounded auction of the type of material we have always handled.
Highlights are the:
- Aboriginal threepence token 1860 ex Sir Marcus Clark Collection (lot 515, estimate $50,000)
- A choice pattern square penny 1919 being the first issue (lot 963, estimate $35,000)
- A good extremely fine Adelaide pound 1852 (lot 602, estimate $30,000)
- A New South Wales fifteen pence dump 1813 (lot 598, estimate $25,000)
- A very rare Sydney Mint half sovereign 1855 (lot 634, estimate $40,000),
- A Charles I Oxford Mint gold unite 1643 (lot 1321, estimate $25,000)
- and a Cromwell crown 1658 (lot 1177, estimate $25,000).
Collections of note are the Paul Ware Collection of Convict Love Tokens (lots 828-855), the Hans Doctor (late of Johannesburg, South Africa) Collection of world gold coins of which the Africa and India are of note, a complete series of proof gold coins of the Royal Wedding 1981 in the world gold coins (session 12), the Peter Gillott Collection of French banknotes (session 13), the Stephen J. Turner Australian Commonwealth Collection with 1922/1 threepence (lot 1109) and the Alan McRae Collection of unusual coins, shipwrecked coins, banking memorabilia and medals whose lots are identified throughout the auction. A consignment for a deceased estate has provided four attractively toned ancient Greek Italian silver coins (lots 2237, 8, 9, 42). In the British silver and bronze (session 8), there are specialised collections of unofficial farthings (the Alexander Collection, lots 1264-1283) and theatre tickets and passes with many from the W.G. Wright Collection (refer to Sale 89B). Both are at a very advanced stage in their area that should attract bidding from the UK. The Irish agricultural medals in session 9 are also of note.
