ST BATHANS, Grand Handicap, stock medal in gold (probably 9ct, 6.5g, 21mm), by G. & T.Y. (G & T Young, Dunedin), scroll and ring top suspension, reverse inscribed 'First/1897/F.A.Haig'. Very fine.

The annual St Patricks Day carnival was held at St Bathans on 17 March 1897, run by the St Bathans Athletic Club. A report of the day suggests the win was a popular one and that the prize medal 'is a pretty one of very chaste design'.
