Awarded MM: LG 22/1/1917, p836; CAG 29/6/1917, p1395 - to 1616 Corporal Stewart Cossey Hull, 27 Aust Infy Bn for bravery in the Field.
Recommendation: On evening of 5th Nov. 1916 during retirement from Bayonet Trench he stayed behind at Right end of the trench & covered the retirement of the men with a Lewis gun. He was seen to put two enemy m/guns out of action also the gunners. He blew up his own gun with a Mills grenade as he was too exhausted to get it out of the trench. He returned alone after midnight.
The Military Medal presented to Stewart Hull in June 1917 was posted by him by registered mail to Australia. The ship on which the mail was sent was the P. & O. liner S.S. Mongolia that Hull claimed was sunk by the enemy soon after leaving England. The ship struck a mine on 23 June 1917 and sank off the coast of India. Some survivors were saved from the sinking ship but it was not possible to save the mail. Hull was advised in 1920 that he would need to lodge a Statutory Declaration and also pay some money to have the medal replaced. There is no record in his Service File that this ever happened.
