MACEDON, kingdom of Philip II, (359-336 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (14.35 g), Pella mint, period IIa, issued c.348/7-343/2 B.C., obv. head of Zeus laureate to right, rev. naked youth or small man (Philip II), on horseback to right, holding long palm branch, corn ear to right below, above **FILIP POU*. (cf.S.6680, Le Rider 163 [pl,7, p.24 obv. die D98, reverse R133], cf.Muller 245, SNG ANS 374). In high relief, nearly very fine with two test cuts on reverse, very rare.

Ex Baldwin's Auction Sale 28, Octiber 9, 2001 (lot 1023 part); previously from the Paeonian Hoard sold by Sotheby's London, April 16, 1969 (lot 9 part) and was sold to Marston for ?24, coin includes ticket and was regarded as a contemporary copy. Le Rider notes 5 examples of this type. Lot incluudes collector's detailed flip.
