PAIR: British War Medal 1914-18; Mercantile Marine War Medal 1914-18. P.S.Cowgill. Australia. 1229. Both medals impressed. Roughly mounted on a velvet backing in a timber framed board with Mine Clearance Service badge painted above, the first medal dark toned and the second with an oxidation spot and the ribbon marked and this last ribbon and medal now affixed to the board with blue tack, otherwise very fine.

Phillip Snowden Cowgill, multiple occupations including cotton weaver, cook, farmer, steward, mariner and post master, born 05Feb1888 at Nelson, Lancashire, UK; Emb.26Dec1912 from London via RMS Remeura for New Zealand; Engaged in Australian Merchant Navy in 1916 but no surviving record of sea going service; Enl.11Nov1916 in NZEF and to 1st Infantry Div but apparently not deployed overseas; tried to enlist in AIF but rejected due to chest measurement; Enl.24Apr1918 in AIF for Home Service and to D Coy 3 District Guard, Domain; awarded 3 days confinement to camp for being absent on parade 30May1918; to B Coy 25Jul1918; AWOL 20 to 21Oct1918 and awarded 7 days confinement to camp; Disch.15Dec1918; in 1934 was the Post Master at Cororooke, Vic; Died 06Jul1956 at Cororooke and buried at Colac, Vic. Phillip Snowden Cowgill was a nephew of Philip Snowden, 1st Viscount Snowden of Ickornshaw in North Yorkshire, England.
