SICILY, Syracuse, (287-279 B.C.), AE 22-26, obv. Zeus Hellanios laureate head to left, with portion of legend [DIOS ELL]ANIOU, before, rev. eagle standing left on thunderbolt with open wings A to left in field, around [SURAKOS]IWN, overstruck on Bruttium, Locri Epizephyrii, (300-268 B.C.), rev. LOKR[W]N on left with winged fulman (thunderbolt) across field, (Original coin cf.S.1211, SNG Cop. 788, overstruck on cf.S.668, SNG ANS 541-2). Uneven flan, flan crack, off centred on obverse, eagle missing head, otherwise very fine.
An interesting overstrike as the undertype must be earlier than 279 B.C. when the issue from Syracuse ceased. The Locri Epizephyrii bronze are dated in most publications 300-268 B.C. This overstrike would revise that dating to 300-280 B.C.
