JULIUS CAESAR, (c.46 B.C.), silver denarius, uncertain Spanish mint probably Utica, (4.000 grams), obv. Ceres head to right, around COS TERT DICT ITER, rev. simpulum, sprinkler, capis and lituus, AVGVR above, PONT MAX below, D to right (S.1403 [£125 VF], Cr.467/1, Syd.1024, C. Julius Caesar 4). Slightly off centred on the reverse, otherwise good very fine and very scarce.
The issue was probably struck to pay his successful legions after the battle of Thapsus 6 April B.C. 46. The head of Ceres is emblematic of Africa.
