VICTORIA RAIL, Member of Parliament Free Pass (24mm) in gold (9ct?) 7.8 gms with loop suspension. Engraved on reverse, J.W. McLachlan, Esq. M.L.A. Very fine and scarce.

James Weir McLachlan (1862-1938) born Harcourt, Victoria. He ran the family saddlery business at Sale after his father's death and later became a reporter with the Gippsland Times. He was a member of the Labor Party until 1916 when he resigned over conscription joining National Labor in 1917 and then became an Independent from 1920 onwards. He served as the local member for Gippsland North from 1908 until 1938.
