Bid at live.noble.com.au
BOLIVIA, Philip IV, (1621-1665), cob eight reales, Potosi Mint, (24.35 grams), assayer T, partially dated issue [16]49, with partial inscription HYLY [sic] on reverse, (Calbeto 1629 [T} 1631 for date], KM.19a [type], cf.Calico 423-424, Cayon 6402 [noted for date and assayer]). Double struck and weak in places, waterworn from wreck, large flan crack, fine but of great rarity only noted for piece in Cayon.
The reverse letters noted above are clearly a die engraver's error. The issue represents one of the last condemned issues before the rapid (1652) improvemewnt that took place on the King's orders that resulted in great changes in quality and style that came from this mint.
