DUKE OF WELLINGTON, letter note dated 'London Nov.19 1849', to the Lord Chancellor asking that the names of Joseph Goff Esq. and Captain H.F.Peers may be added to the Commission of the Peace for Hampshire, signed Wellington. Small piece missing from blank left corner, very fine.

Field Marshall Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington KG, GCB, GCH, PC, FRS (1769-1852), referred to as the Duke of Wellington or ’The Iron Duke’. Born in Ireland he was commissioned into the British Army in 1787 as an Ensign. He had a brilliant military career and commanded the Allied army which defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. He was twice Prime Minister of England. He remained Commander-in-Chief of the British Army until his death in 1852.
