L. JULIUS, silver denarius, c.141 B.C., 3.77 grams, Rome Mint, Crawford 224/1, Sydenham 443, BMC 899, B. Julia 1, Obv. Head of Roma r. helmeted, XVI behind, Rev. The Dioscuri r., L IVLI (VL ligated), below horses, ROMA in exerque. Very fine, rare (1515).

Ex C.Pitchfork Collection and previously from the Duke of Northumberland Collection, sold at Sothebys, London, November 4, 1982 (lot 232 part). This is the Specimen described on p.104 as number 39 by Rear Admiral Henry Smyth 'Descriptive Catalogue, A Cabinet of Roman Family Coins belonging to His Grace the Duke of Northumberland K.G.', published 1856.
