BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL, (EIIR) (Civil) with Gallantry emblem. John Brayshaw. Impressed. Toned, uneven toning on obverse due to removal of double side tape, good very fine.

Sydney Morning Herald, 21 Sep 1960, reported as follows;

'Two policemen who struggled with and disarmed a man who had run amok with an axe in the Regent Theatre in September last year were decorated in an investiture at Government House yesterday.

The policemen are Senior Constable Rupert James Cairncross, of Penshurst, and Special Constable John Brayshaw, of Waverley. Each was awarded the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) for gallantry. They were among 99 people invested with insignia and decorations by the Governor, Sir Eric Woodward.

The citations said: Constable Cairncross and Constable Brayshaw displayed courage of a very high order and outstanding devotion to duty.

The man who ran amok injured 12 people, one fatally. Constable Brayshaw, an incapacitated ex-serviceman, though unarmed, had seized the man, suffering a blow to the temple which knocked him to the ground. He again attacked the man.'
