In Constable Jones' own account of the escapees capture he said, 'Two prisoners coming to Melbourne from Tallangatta, jumped their police escorts and took their guns. They had handcuffed the escorts, and then jumped off the train at Royal Park. They were in the Royal Park Golf Course area, so my colleague and I searched for them, found them and gave chase. We managed to catch them after they had split up. When we arrived back where we had planned to meet, I had one prisoner and the other prisoner had my mate. They wanted to swap but we managed to get them both in the end. One of those times when all's well that ends well.'
