DOMITIAN, (A.D. 81-96), AE as, Rome mint, issued A.D. 88, (10.50 g), obv. laureate head of Domitian to right, around IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VIII CENS PER PP, rev. Domitian sacrifing before temple with victimarius, musicians and attendant, Tiber left reclining, around COS XIIII LVD SAEC FEC, S C in exergue, (cf.S.2802 [A,A£225 VF], RIC 383, C.91). Attractive dark patina, good very fine and rare, the most interesting reverse.
Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 83, lot 3425. Previously the William C. Boyd Collection sold by Baldwin's Auctions September 26, 2005 (lot 311), and Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, London March 9, 1892 (lot 217), with original Boyd ticket.
