WWI: Donald Urquhart, born at Auckland, NZ; Enl.19Aug1914 at Morphetville, Sth Aust, in 3LHR, with stated previous military service in NSW Lancers, Queensland Bushmen's Contingent to S.Africa, Natal Military Mounted Police, B.S.A. Mounted Police, Natal Rebellion and King Edward VII Coronation.
In October 1920 one of the passengers arriving at Melbourne on board the steamer Demosthenes was Sergeant-Major Donald Urquhart, who had been in South Africa for some time acting as organising secretary of the Comrades of the Great War, the soldiers' association there. Sergeant Major Urquhart, who served in the South African war, was an Anzac, and afterwards engaged in recruiting and war loan work in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, Honolulu, and South Africa. While in South Africa he was chosen as the Unionist candidate for the Jeppe seat in the Union Parliament, but was found to be ineligible because he had not resided in South Africa for five years.
