Graves Gifford of Coolgardie, 1st (Mounted Infantry) Contingent; contingent comprised 5 officers and 125 other ranks; Emb.07Nov1899; WIA 09Feb1900, falling from a horse in action at Slingersfontein, previously 3 ribs broken at Enslin; RTA 13Dec1900; Disemb.29Dec1900 at Albany, WA; Disbanded 29Mar1901.

In a news report in May 1900 it was stated that now Lance Corporal Gifford had written two detailed letters from the Australian Convalescent Depot at Maitland to Major Moor of the Western Australian Mounted Infantry concerning the death of Lieutenant Hensman at the base hospital. These letters were submitted to judge Mr Justice Hensman, the Lieutenant's father, who consented for them to be published.

A news report on 14 August 1900 on the Boer War stated that Graves Gifford was now a Sergeant in charge of 'detail' stores, but had just gone up towards Pretoria with Colonel Hoad to rejoin his company. It further stated that Gifford was offered a commission in the Yeomanry, but the offer reached Perth while he was in Africa and came too late for acceptance.

On 18 April 1903 it was reported in the Coolgardie Miner, p4, that Mr Graves Gifford, formerly of Coolgardie, was the assayer at a mine called the Dahareib near Assoun in Egypt. Then in December 1919 Graves Gifford, who had an assay business in Hunter Street, Coolgardie was elected to the committee of the Coolgardie Chamber of Mines.
