QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899, (type 2 reverse), - six clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, South Africa 1901. 31 Pte. J.Reidy, S.A.M.R. Engraved. Group of clasps not attached to suspender, very small edge bump, nicely toned, good very fine.

James Reidy, smelter, born 17Feb1872 at Watervale, served in Mounted Rifles, Port Pirie; A social night was given to Samuel Barnett and James Reidy on 31Dec1900 who departed on 2 Jan1900 from Port Pirie to join the 2nd Contingent; contingent comprised 6 officers and 112 other ranks; Emb.26Jan1900; RTA 29Mar1901; Disemb.01May1901 at Sydney and overland to Adelaide via Melbourne arriving 12May1901; Disbanded 15May1901.

A social night was tendered in the International Hall at Port Pirie on 12 May 1902 by the military of the town to welcome home returned members of the Fifth and Sixth Contingents. Sergeant James Reidy responded to a toast to 'Our boys in South Africa' proposed by Dr Bennett.

James Reidy died on 11 December 1924 after a sever illness over the course of the previous eight months. His prowess in many branches of sport had earned him a name foremost among followers of coursing, rifle shooting, racing (he officiated as judge at the Pirie Racing Club), trotting and other fields of sport. His greatest love was with greyhounds and he ran many prominent longtails throughout the State. He had also held the position of President of the Port Pirie Cricket Association, was once a member of the Fire Brigade and for the previous 15 years had worked with George Wills and Co (Pirie Branch). He also held a high position in the Buffalo Lodge. Flags in Pirie were flown at half mast as a tribute of respect to one of its finest citizens and his funeral was one of the largest witnessed for a long time.
