George Chesher A Sqn Mounted Rifles; original contingent comprised 4 officers and 100 other ranks but added to later; Emb.03Nov1899; WIA 19Feb1900 in the attack on the Boer Commander, General Cronjie's commandos at the Battle of Paardeberg; Invalided to Aust and Disemb.30Aug1900.
In an article in the Leader (Orange, NSW) on 31 January 1900 George Chesher was reported as one of five young men from Eugowra to fight the Boers. It stated that 'All are at home in the saddle, and good with the Winchester, and are sober and steady young fellows, and full of grit.'
After recovering from his wound, George Chesher moved to Sydney and joined the Tramway Service as an Electric Driver in the Traffic Branch. In November 1912 he was promoted to Receiving Clerk.
