Empire of Trebizond, John II (1280-1297) (claims Bendall 2015), John I Axuchos (claims Retowski 1974), (1235-1238), silver asper, (2.87 g), obv. OA **G*I - E V **G* E NI O, St. Eugenius standing, holding lomg cross, dots beside cross, rev. I W A N I C - O K M N John standing holding labarum and akakia, touched by Manus Dei (the hand of God) above right, (S.2608, Bendall 31, cf.Retowski 18, [Pl.I]). Toned, very fine, rare.
Bendall in 2015 assigns the issue type to John II and notes no issues of silver aspers can be attributed to John I. Retowski and Wroth considered that John II's first issue of aspers to be John I.
