EDWARD I, (1272-1307), silver penny, (in the name of Henry III - posthumous phase), long cross type, class VI, Bury St Edmunds Mint, (1.45 g), obv. crowned facing bust, sceptre in right hand, crude face with large almond shaped eyes and long wide locks of hair, low crown with fleured ornaments and four pellets below, +HENRICVS REX around, rev. long cross voided dividing ION ON SEINTED, trefoil in each quarter surrounded by pellets, (S.1377, N.1001). Toned, partly flat strike, slightly off centre, fine.

Ex Colchester (2) hoard which was discovered in 1969 within the same house plot as the earlier one found in 1902. This hoard consisted of 14,065 silver pennies buried in a lidded lead canister, mainly of the English voided long cross type alongside contemporary Scottish and Irish issues. Until the discovery of Colchester 2 the issue of John of Bury St Edmunds Class VI was known by a single example. This hoard contained 1,916 of them.
