GORDIAN III, (A.D. 238-244), silver denarius, issued summer 241, Rome mint, (3.26g), obv.laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right of Gordian III, around IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, rev. Salus standing to right, feeding snake held in her arms, around SALVS AVGVSTI, (S.8681, RIC 129A, C.325). Bright with golden patination, several minor hoard spots on obverse, extremely fine and scarce.
This is a special issue to commemorate the marriage of Gordian III and Sabina Tranquillina in the summer of 241.
