N.Z.R. (New Zealand Railways), Free Pass, c1900, handcrafted in gold (15ct, 9.8g, 43x15mm), no maker, ring top suspension, reverse inscribed 'N.Z.R./Free Pass/Mr R.W.McVilly'. Good very fine and an extremely rare type.
Richard William McVilly (1861-1949) was born in Dunedin. He joined the Railways Department in 1879, became Chief Clerk, General Manager's Office in 1908. He was General Manager 1919-1924. Also first secretary of the New Zealand Railway Officers' Institute 1895. Managing Director of Black and White Cabs 1926, and member of Wellington City Council 1927-1929. Involved in administration of Wellington and national sporting bodies, especially athletics, boxing and rowing. Died in Wellington.
