Ronald Leslie Bailey QSO was born at Napier, New Zealand on 15 December 1926. He was raised in various public works camps and went to four different primary schools in the central North Island. His secondary school education was at Wairoa High School and Gisborne High School. After leaving school he worked as a clerk, then a carpenter and in 1956 he became a union organiser.^^After the retirement of Phil Holloway from the Heretaunga electorate Ron Bailey won the Labour Party nomination for the seat. He served for seven terms as a Member of the House of Representatives for Heretaunga from 12 December 1960 until he retired on 28 November 1981. During his political career he was Labour's junior whip from 1966 to 1972 and Chairman of Committees from 16 February 1973 until 10 September 1974. His ministerial roles included Minister of Railways in the third Labour government and Minister of Electricity from 10 September 1974 to 12 December 1975.^^In the 1987 Queen's Birthday Honours he was appointed a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for public service and in 1990 he was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal. He was also awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977. Ronald Leslie Bailey died at Auckland on 16 April 2015.^^With research.
