MCHARDY MATERNITY HOME, Napier, badge struck in voided silver (32.5x39mm), no maker, pin-back, reverse inscribed 'A.A.Nicholson'. Good very fine.

^McHardy Lodge (formerly McHardy Maternity Home) is located on the north side of Napier Hill. It was built in the 1890s as a 'near to city' residence for Leslie McHardy, a Scottish immigrant who ran Blackhead Station, a large sheep property about 90 kilometres south of Napier. During WWI Mr McHardy allowed this family residence to be used as a nursing home to care for injured Kiwi soldiers returning from the war. In 1917, the property was gifted to the Napier Hospital Board for conversion into a maternity home and midwifery school. It continued in this role until the late 1970s. The property was sold and in the 1990s McHardy House was fully restored as a stately private residence, before evolving into luxury accommodation in the mid-2000s.
