VR (VICTORIA REIGNS), 1897, prize fob medal handcrafted in silver (27x27.5mm), no maker, ring top suspension, reverse inscribed 'Waihi/Juniors/P.Shallard/June/1897'. Nearly very fine.
On 8 March 1888 South Canterbury Union was established with a number of clubs and after its first meeting, two of these clubs, Geraldine and Winchester, combined to form the Waihi Club. Percy Shallard's family were active playing members in the area particularly with Fairlie Creek Football Club. The above medal, designed to honour Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 was awarded to Percy Shallard as a member of the Waihi Juniors football team. In the June 1897 'Record Reign' athletics, cycling and football competition played at the Timaru Athletic Club's ground, Waihi played Ashburton in their first of the Junior competition games and won 5-0. Then in the final they played Shamrock and again beat them 5-0. In both matches, Percy Shallard kicked a goal to convert a try.^^With research.
