WORLD MEDALS, Great Britain, Horatio Bottomley, 1918, cast iron square plaque depicting a bust of Bottomley, made from the iron of the German submarine Deutschland, (174 x 123mmm); also with original International Newsreel photograph of Bottomley, backed by notice of his trial for 'alleged fraud'. Very fine and rare. (2)
Horatio William Bottomley?(23 March 1860?- 26 May 1933) was an English?financier,?journalist,?editor, newspaper proprietor,?swindler, and?Member of Parliament. After the First World War the German submarine Deutschland was turned over to the British government who put the ship on display as a war trophy. She was subsequently sold to the owner/publisher of the John Bull paper, Horatio Bottomley, who turned her into a tourist attraction. He produced a host of souvenirs that were sold throughout the UK. ^
