First two medals unnamed as issued, Lieut. E.J.C.Ashmore. 1/10/Gurkha Rfls. on third medal, Lieut. E.J.C.Ashmore. on fourth and fifth medals, Capt. E.J.C.Ashmore. 3-70 Rfls. on last medal. All the named medals impressed. Display court mounted, contact marks, otherwise fine - very fine.; (Son) Group of Four to KIA: 1939-45 Star; Burma Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45. I.S.C. is Independent Schools Council.^2) A scroll commemorating Captain William Ashmore, The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.^3) Details of Taukkyan War Cemetery in Burma.^4) Colour photo of Capt W.F.C. Ashmore's commemorative plaque at the cemetery. ^DSO: Supplement to LG 30/7/1919, p9678 - to Capt. (A./Maj.) Edwin James Caldwell Ashmore, M.C., 10th Gurkha Rif., attd. 2/3rd Gurkha Rifles (Egypt).^Citation: For conspicuous gallantry on September 19th, 1918. With the greatest dash, he personally led his battalion forward during the original attack on the Tabsor Defences when, owing to the dense smoke of our own and the enemy barrage, it had lost direction and formation. The rapidity of the advance of his battalion, and the very heavy losses both in men and material inflicted on the enemy, was in a large measure due to his personal leadership. He led his company across the open under heavy fire with exemplary steadiness, assaulted the enemy's position with great dash and complete success, and consolidated the ground gained with marked skill. Sandhurst; Entered Indian Army 1913; attached 1st P.O.W. Leinster Regt; posted to 10th Gurkha Rifles 1914; trf to Burma Rifles 1921; served European War, France 1914-15 (wounded); Gallipoli 1915; Palestine 1917-18 (MC, DSO and MID); Malabar 1921-22; Burma Rebellion 1930-32; retired 1933; one son killed in Burma in 1944. ^(Son) William Frederick Caldwell Ashmore 121466, 1st Bn, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry attd. 1st Bn, 8th Gurkha Rifles who died age 23 on 20 February 1944, Remembered with honour at Taukkyan War Cemetery in Burma.^With research.
