AFC GROUP OF FIVE: Air Force Cross (GVIR); Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45; General Service Medal 1918-62 (EIIR), - clasp - Cyprus; General Service Medal 1962-2007 (EIIR), - clasp - South Arabia. 1953 on the reverse of the lower arm of the first medal, the second and third medals unnamed as issued, Flt. Lt. J.F.B.Delany. R.A.F. on last two medals. First and fourth medals engraved, last medal impressed. Court mounted, some light contact marks, otherwise good very fine.

Together with,^1) Nine RAF Log Books 1945 - 1974 and a Civilian Log Book 1966-1972 including a Student Pilot's Licence form.^2) RAF Swimming Proficiency Certificate dated 19 July 1960 at RAF Nicosia.^3) Rolls-Royce Limited Aero-Engine School Certificate covering construction, operation and flight handling of Rolls-Royce Dart 101, dated 5 January 1962. ^4) Whitworth Gloster Aircraft Ltd Certificate at the Aircraft Servicing School covering airframe, electrics and operating techniques of Argosy C Mk.1, 11Dec to 21Dec1961 and 8Jan-26Jan1962.^5) RAF Sea Survival Training certificate dated 19 May 1967.^6) Programme booklet for No.99 Squadron RAF Consecration and Presentation of the Squadron Standard at Lyneham on 27 September 1957.^7) Various other documents and letters all relating to J.F.B.Delany AFC.^Note: A couple of official documents have Delany's name as John Delany and another has it as James Francis Joseph Delany.^8) Photograph of RAF Officer Cadet Training Unit, Spitalgate 1950; another framed under glass but not identified, but appears to be of the similar unit; another group photo of RAF Lyneham in 1944; a selection of various other photos relating to Delany's RAF service. ^AFC: Supplement to LG 1/1/1953, p33 - to Flying Officer John Francis Bernard Delany (1867264) RAF.^Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief's Commendation: January 1965 New Year Honours List but London Gazette details not sighted.^James Francis Bernard 'Paddy' Delany commenced flight training with the RAF in June 1945 on Tiger Moths and Harvards, then transferred to Ansons at No.3 School at Leuchars. When his training was completed he transferred to 203 Squadron at St Eval flying Lancasters. In 1951 he joined the School of Maritime Reconnaissance at St Mawgan and in June 1953 he moved to the Air Sea Warfare Development Unit flying Shakletons. In August 1956 he moved to 242 OCU Dishfort and soon after to 99 Squadron at Lyneham from where he flew to Cyprus. He continued with various flights to the UK, Africa, Australia and Cyprus until May 1961.^He then flew an Argosy with 114 Squadron carrying out training in parachute drops before joining 105 Squadron in October 1964 at Khormaksar in Aden, Yemen. In June 1967 he returned to the UK to the Air Training Squadron at Brize Norton flying VC10s. When his training was complete he joined 10 Squadron at Brize Norton. This squadron became involved with VIP transport and aeromedical evacuations. In January 1971 he transferred to 241 OCU at Brize Norton. He finished flying for the RAF in July 1974 having completed 11,774.20 hours. He was then based at RAF Northolt briefing pilots involved with Royal Flights (a newspaper cutting is included with the lot showing Paddy Delany briefing pilots who were to fly members of the Royal Family).
