U.S.A., London elephant token halfpenny, c.1694, thick planchet; coinage of William Wood, Rosa Americana issue, penny, 1723, struck in brass, Wood's Hibernia coinage, halfpennies, 1723 (2), (Yeoman p.22, 24 and 25). Poor; good (2); last coin fine. (4)
Ex H.P. Whittle Collection. The elephant token was struck in America or London in copper and are related to the Carolina elephant tokens by a shared elephant obverse die. William Wood, an Englishman, obtained a patent from George I to make coins for Ireland and the American Colonies.
