He was cut off from his party and retired to Poortjes Kopje, which he found to be occupied by Boers when they opened fire at less than 150 yards. Another party of 30 Boers galloped toward his rear, almost completely surrounding him. Taking advantage of some dead ground, Walsh galloped past the Boers in the rear, who opened up a steady fire as he emerged. The Boers pursued him to Modderfontein Ridge where he was faced with still another party of Boers on the higher ground. He took cover in two old kraals and kept 100 Boers at bay for four hours. He got no help from the main body because the high wind drove away the sound of firing.^Richard Walsh, age 24, from Stanthorpe, Qld served with 2nd (Queensland Mounted Infantry) Contingent comprising 10 officers and 144 other ranks; Emb.13Jan1900; Disemb.24Feb1900 at Cape Town; According to one medal roll, Regt No.73 R.Walsh was a Shoeing Smith and he was transferred to the S.A.C.
